Community Collaborations

These sectors include youth, parents, schools, law enforcement, faith-based organizations, healthcare providers, businesses, media, tribal leadership, and local governments.

Key partnerships include:

  • Schools and Educators: Implementing mental health initiatives and prevention programs for students.
  • Tribal Leaders: Collaborating to deliver culturally sensitive services to tribal communities.
  • Local Governments and Law Enforcement: Working with county officials and juvenile probation offices to align efforts with community needs.
  • Healthcare and Nonprofits: Partnering with organizations like WIC, the Northern Nevada Food Bank, and Catholic Charities to provide essential resources.
  • Boys and Girls Clubs and Attorney General’s Office: Supporting youth and family-focused initiatives.

Internships and Workforce Development

FCC is proud to host social work internships for students from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC). These internships provide hands-on experience in prevention, family support, and community engagement, preparing the next generation of social workers to meet the needs of rural communities.

A Shared Vision for Change

At FCC, our work is made possible by the dedication of our team, the collaboration of community partners, and the passion of youth leaders. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier future for the families and individuals of Pershing, Humboldt, Lander, and Mineral counties.

How we got started

Frontier Community Coalition (FCC) was founded in 2001 by Judge Richard A. Wagner of Nevada’s 6th Judicial District Court. Recognizing the urgent need to support at-risk youth in rural communities, Judge Wagner formed FCC under the Juvenile Probation Department as a way to create alternative education programs. His vision was to ensure that young people in Pershing, Humboldt, and Lander counties had access to resources and opportunities that would keep them on a positive path and prevent them from slipping through the cracks of traditional systems.

Since those early days, FCC has grown into a multifaceted organization with two distinct divisions to serve the unique needs of Nevada’s frontier communities:

  • Our Prevention Division operates across all four counties—Pershing, Humboldt, Lander, and Mineral—delivering services focused on substance misuse prevention, youth engagement, mental health awareness, and community education. This division is also home to our nationally recognized youth teams, which empower young leaders to address critical issues in their communities and advocate for positive change.
  • Our Action Agency Division covers Humboldt, Pershing, and Mineral counties, providing vital support through Family Resource Centers (FRCs). These centers offer wrap-around services such as food distribution, housing assistance, harm reduction, and family support to ensure the health and well-being of individuals and families.

Central to FCC’s approach are Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Peer Support Specialists, who bring invaluable lived experience and cultural understanding to the communities they serve. These team members help bridge gaps in healthcare, mental health services, and social supports, empowering individuals to access the resources they need to thrive.

Judge Wagner’s original vision of collaboration and innovation continues to guide our work as FCC builds on its legacy of service. From its roots in juvenile probation to its current role as a trusted provider of prevention and action agency programs, FCC remains committed to strengthening families, supporting individuals, and improving the overall well-being of Nevada’s frontier communities.

What we do

At Frontier Community Coalition (FCC), our mission is to strengthen families, empower individuals, and improve the overall well-being of Nevada’s frontier communities. With a focus on collaboration and innovation, FCC works across Pershing, Humboldt, Lander, and Mineral counties to provide a wide range of prevention and support services.

Prevention Programs

Our Prevention Division covers all four counties and focuses on addressing critical issues like substance misuse, mental health, and youth engagement. Through state and federal grants, we deliver evidence-based programs and initiatives that promote healthier communities, including:

  • Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Grant: Empowering local youth and adult coalitions to reduce substance misuse through education and advocacy.
  • FRN Opioid Grant: Subgranting to local partners like the 11th Judicial District Juvenile Probation Office to combat opioid use and support harm reduction strategies.
  • Statewide Partnership for Meth and Other Prevention Measures (SAPP Grant): Addressing methamphetamine use and other substance misuse issues in our communities.
  • Tobacco Prevention Grants (FHN and CAT 28): Focusing on preventing the misuse of tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol.
  • Youth Teams: FCC leads nationally recognized youth teams that empower young leaders to take an active role in their communities. These teams work on advocacy, prevention, and community service projects, fostering leadership skills and creating meaningful change.

Action Agency and Family Resource Centers

As the federally recognized Action Agency for Pershing, Humboldt, and Mineral counties, FCC provides critical services through Family Resource Centers. These centers serve as a hub for wrap-around support, offering:

  • Food distribution in partnership with the Northern Nevada Food Bank and other local organizations.
  • Housing assistance through HUD-funded programs like Breaking Free: Rapid Rehousing Empowerment and Rise and Thrive: Permanent Housing Initiative to combat homelessness.
  • Harm reduction and wellness programs designed to meet individuals where they are.
  • Assistance with navigating benefits, healthcare, and other essential resources.

Community Engagement and Partnerships

FCC prides itself on working closely with local governments, schools, law enforcement, tribal leadership, and community organizations. Our partnerships include collaboration with the Rural CoC, Domestic Violence Intervention (DVI), WIC, and others to ensure comprehensive support for individuals and families.

Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Peer Support Specialists

At the heart of our services are Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Peer Support Specialists who bring lived experience, cultural understanding, and hands-on support to our communities. Whether helping individuals navigate healthcare systems, access mental health services, or find stable housing, these team members play a vital role in bridging gaps and creating pathways to success.

Our Impact

For over two decades, FCC has worked tirelessly to address the unique challenges of Nevada’s frontier counties. From empowering youth through leadership programs to supporting families with food and housing services, we remain committed to building healthier, stronger communities.
